Faith leaders, theologians, activists, and ecumenical partners from across Africa gathered in Maputo, Mozambique from 19–21 May 2026 for the AATEEA Regional Convening on Human Sexuality and Gender Diversity: Faith Beyond Borders.
The convening created a courageous and reflective space for dialogue on gender, sexuality, justice, dignity, and the role of the church in confronting exclusion. Participants engaged deeply with African liberation theology, feminist theology, contextual Bible study methodologies, and lived experiences from faith communities across the continent.
Through presentations, storytelling, group discussions, and theological reflection, participants explored how scripture has historically been used both to harm and to heal. The gathering highlighted the importance of reading the Bible with — rather than about — marginalised communities, and affirmed the need for life-giving theological approaches rooted in justice, dignity, and accompaniment.
The convening also strengthened ecumenical collaboration and regional solidarity. Participants committed to continue developing contextual resources, expanding dialogue spaces, supporting theological education reform, and coordinating responses to growing anti-gender movements across Africa.
The gathering closed with renewed hope, deeper relationships, and a shared commitment to building faith communities where all people can belong, flourish, and fully participate in the life of the church.
